For better or worse, the weird looking animals of the medieval bestiary tradition have been a human fascination since what seems like the beginning of time. At first, they occupied the mythology of antiquity and medieval theological texts. Then, perhaps due to their absolute absurdity, these strange creatures continued to inspire the human imagination until they ended up on current social media like Twitter and Facebook, gracing the feeds of unsuspecting innocents who did not wish to see a unicorn being hunted or a grotesque medieval dog that day. They have informed everything from our silliest college meme, to the most popular young adult fiction of our generation (Harry Potter), to our greatest fantastical epics (Lord of the Rings), to our religious beliefs. Though strange and seemingly irrelevant figments of the imagination of people far removed from our current reality, the medieval bestiary has actually done a great deal to influence our current worldview. They are an important example of how medieval history never really ended, and our study of their influence on popular culture is intended to demonstrate the great magnitude of their influence on our daily lives.
